Rule Book

General

1. Rules of Betting

1.1 PLAYA reserves the right to change, amend or add to these rules as they see fit by giving no further notice.

1.2 A client is deemed to have accepted these rules by placing a bet with PLAYA.

2. Age Restrictions

2.1 PLAYA only accepts bets from clients over the age of 18. The right to void any transactions with minors is reserved.

3. Placing Bets

3.1 A bet shall be deemed void if it is not transmitted in full.

3.2 A number of bets may be treated as being one when a client places multiple copies of the same bet. PLAYA reserves the right to void bets where there may be evidence of collusion between two or more clients.

3.3 PLAYA reserves the right to refuse any bet or part of a bet without giving a reason at any time.

3.4 The minimum bet is R1 online and R2 in PLAYA Betting Shops.

3.5 Where a client gives ambiguous instructions PLAYA reserves the right to split the total staked between the potential outcomes. Where this is impractical PLAYA reserves the right to void the bet. In either instance the decision of the company is final.

3.6 Multiple bets are accepted, however no such bet can be accepted where the result of one, influences the outcome of another (see Rule 7 Related Bets).

3.7 All prices are subject to variation and become fixed at the time a bet is placed.

3.8 PLAYA reserves the right to refuse any bet without explanation.

3.9 Bets will be accepted up to the advertised start time. If a bet is inadvertently accepted which includes an event after its start time, PLAYA reserves the right to void any affected.

3.10 Handicap value is always added to Home Team/Player.

3.11 The maximum pay-out per ticket is R2, 000,000 (or currency equivalent).

4. Fixed Odds Win Bet

4.1 A fixed price is quoted for a specific horse/team/player to win an event. The fixed price odds are agreed at the time the bet is struck. For example, if the price of Manchester United is 3-1 to win the premier league and you stake R1 on Manchester United to win, you will win R3 plus get your stake returned.

5. Fixed Odds Place Bet

5.1 PLAYA offers fixed odds place betting on select horse racing events. The fixed price odds are agreed at the time the bet is struck. Fixed odds place prices are determined off the win price of the horse and the number of runners in the event. Due to this, prices vary from event to event.

6. Multiple Bet

6.1 By selecting more than one selection over two different events, the bet becomes a multiple. For the bet to win, all predications have to win. In a treble (3 teams/horses in separate events), if only two selections win, then the bet is a losing bet and no pay out will be made.

6.2 To calculate the multiple odds on a selection of two soccer teams priced at 2/1 and 4/1, take your first selection at 2/1 and add on a point (3/1). Take your second selection at 4/1 and add on a point (5/1). Multiply your “new” odds 3/1 and 5/1 and you will get 15/1. Now subtract one full point and you will get your multiple odd of 14/1.

7. Special Multiple Bets and Bet Systems

7.1 Trixie (4 Combinations), Yankee (11 Combinations), Canadian (26 Combinations), Heinz (57 Combinations), Super Heinz (120 Combinations), Goliath (247 combinations) are multiple bet types found in the “Bet System” portion of the betting slip. Looking at the Yankee which has 11 combinations, the bet consists of six doubles, four trebles and one quadruple. The stake of the bet will be determined by entering in amount you would like on each combination. For example, a R10 yankee with 11 combinations will cost R10 multiplied by 11, which would equal R110. A minimum of 2 selections must win to gain a return on a Yankee bet. Please note that the more combinations you choose the more your stake will be.

7.2 For Horseracing, the above types of bets will be adjusted according to the starting price. For sports bets, the price at the time when the bet was struck shall apply.

8. Tote/Open Bets

8.1 PLAYA offers tote bets on horse racing events as well as certain sporting events. The dividends paid on these bets are per the official totalisator results.

9. Time Periods for Bet Types

9.1 Please note that the below bet rules apply to normal time unless the bet states that it is “1st half”, “2nd half”, “extra time”, “overtime”, “both halves”, “10 minutes” or any other time period markets. For example: “Total goals” winning bets must predict the total amount of goals scored in normal time. If “Total Goals is preceded or followed by “1st half” and reads “1st Half Total Goals” or “Total Goals 1st Half”, then winning bets must predict the total amount of goals scored in the first half only, which is the first 45 minutes plus any additional or injury time. The same time period rules apply to “2nd half”, “extra time”, “both halves”, “10 minutes” or any other time period markets. The same applies to extra/over time and only goals scored during extra/overtime will be considered.

9.2 Certain sports have specific time periods which may be unique to the sport. For example: Basketball matches are divided into quarters where the completion of quarter 1 and quarter 2 are considered half time. Please ensure that you are familiar with each sports unique time periods when placing bets that are time specific. Should you have any questions about a sport or should you need any clarification, please contact PLAYA support.

10. Customer Disputes

10.1 PLAYA cannot be held responsible for any typing or human error in offering odds other than those intended. In the event that this occurs, PLAYA reserves the right to either void any affected bets or to correct the error.

11. Bet Settlement

11.1 All winning bets will be settled at the prices shown on PLAYA at the time the bet was accepted. This does not include *palpable errors or any post-game disputes by either team that alters the final outcome of a game at a later point.

11.2 A number of circumstances may arise where a bet or wager is accepted, or a payment is made, by us in error. A non-exhaustive list of such circumstances is as follows:

11.2.1 where PLAYA mis-state any odds or terms of a bet or gaming wager to you as a result of obvious error or omission in inputting the information or setting up a market, or as a result of a computer malfunction;

11.2.2 Where we have made a *palpable error, a palpable error occurs where:

11.2.2.1 in relation to bets placed prior to an event taking place, the prices/terms offered are materially different from those available in the general market; or

11.2.2.2 In relation to any event, the price/terms offered at the time the bet is placed are clearly incorrect given the probability of the event occurring;

*A palpable error could be any incorrect information published in regard to an event. For example, incorrectly (reversed) setup handicap, wrong team/teams/participants, incorrect deadlines or technical errors etc.

12. Related Bets

12.1 Multiple bets that combine different selections within the same event are not accepted where the outcome of one affects or is affected by the other.

For example, in a Football match involving Manchester United, two selections may be: Manchester United to win 2-0 and Manchester United's Wayne Rooney to be scorer of the first match goal.

The bets are related as Wayne Rooney's goal-scoring performance would influence Manchester United winning the match 2-0. A double combining the above selections is not possible using their market prices.

Special prices may be offered for the combined eventuality. When a special price is not available and such a bet is taken in error, it will be settled as two single bets with the stake equally divided.

12.2 Multiple bets that combine selections that are resolved at different times but still within the same tournament. These bets will be settled as instructed with the price of the second or subsequent selection being determined at each individual stage.

For example, in a Tennis tournament two selections may be: Roger Federer to win the semi-final of Wimbledon and Roger Federer to win the Wimbledon tournament outright.

As the odds of the second selection depends on the outcome of the first, the odds of Roger Federer winning the tournament at the time the bet was accepted cannot be used to calculate the double odds. The correct odds after the initial selection is completed will be attributed instead.

12.3 Multiple bets that combine selections within different events where the outcome of one affects or is affected by the other.

12.4 In the case of all multiples including selections with related outcomes, if a bet is taken inadvertently PLAYA reserves the right to void part of or the whole of the bet.

13. Ante Post Bets

13.1 Ante post bets are those placed at prices on named selections taking part in an event before it has started. Bets are accepted all in, run or not, entered or not, which means that should your selection fail to take part in an event, the bet is a loser unless our rules for an individual sport specifically state otherwise.

14. Price Fluctuations

14.1 All prices are subject to fluctuation at all times and without notice.

15. Time of Acceptance

15.1 All bets selected with pre-match prices taken from PLAYA will be accepted up until the displayed start time.
If a bet is accepted which includes a match that has already started and we are not offering prices In Play, that selection will be void.
If we are offering prices "Live/In Play/In Running" on the match, the selection will be accepted at the current price quoted.

16. Abandoned Matches/Postponed/Rearranged Matches

16.1 All bets will be void on matches that are Abandoned/Postponed/Rearranged to play, unless the match is rescheduled to play within the following 24 hours of the original starting time, or unless our / gambling board rules for an individual sport specifically state otherwise.

17. Live / In Play / In Running

17.1 PLAYA makes every attempt to establish a fair assessment of events that transpire during a "Live/In Play/In Running" match on a good faith basis with reference to the TV broadcaster's coverage.

17.2 Situations may arise where it is not possible to categorically state what has happened. In the event that a matter requires closer examination, or the TV broadcaster's coverage is interrupted or fails to start on time for whatever reason, or there is a technical failure in the trading facilities available to PLAYA's traders, we reserve the right to withhold settlement pending further investigation or to void bets.

17.3 If there is no further activity in an event following the acceptance of a In Play bet, these bets will be made void, unless specific sports rules state otherwise.

17.4 If it transpires that the TV broadcaster misses one or more events during a match or we settle a bet incorrectly, we reserve the right to make both positive and negative retrospective adjustments to accounts.

17.5 We rely on the decisions of the officials acting during the course of the game, match or tournament and these decisions shall be final regardless of whether they are subsequently overturned by appeal or otherwise.

Customers cannot combine bets from different events for the same draw. For example. Customers cannot combine one number from the South African Main Draw Incl. Bonus Ball and one number from the South African Main Draw Excl. Bonus Ball. These bets will be separated and treated as related bets.

Horse Racing

General

Bets on horseracing are governed by the following, in the order of precedence they appear: (1) these terms and conditions, (2) the South African Bookmaker Operational Rules, and (3) Tattersall’s Rules of Betting.

An official announcement made by the respective gambling and racing board or Tattersall′s (with the gambling and racing board′s announcement taking precedence in the event of an announcement by both bodies) will govern the settlement of bets should a situation arise not covered by these rules.

In the event of an incorrect price being shown by PLAYA, bets will be settled at the correct price at the time the bet was struck or at SP, whichever is greater. PLAYA reserves the right to adjust board prices.

Ante-Post Betting:

An ante-post bet is a bet that is accepted on a future event before the final field is declared. In the event that the event is postponed or rescheduled due to the weather or other outside influences, then all ante-post bets shall stand. If a runner does not participate in the race or event for any reason, then bets wagered on this runner will be considered as a losing bet. These races or events may be referred to as “all-in run or not” events and no deductions will apply from scratching’s in such events or races.

Ante-post bets will be considered void if the race is officially abandoned, or if the conditions of the race or race venue have been changed. Multiple bets with such selections will be paid out on the remaining selections within the multiple bet.Feature Race Multiples:

If betting is available for the same horse in two separate events/races, and punters wish to take a multiple involving the same selection, then the multiple will be reduced by 1/3 of the full accumulated odds. For example, if Jackson to win the Durban July is priced at 1/1 and Jackson to win the Gold Cup is priced at 15/10, then the full accumulated odds for the multiple will be 4/1. Due to the selection being related, the full accumulated odds will be reduced by 33% and your Double price will now be 27/10.

Withdrawals, Scratching’s, and Abandoned Races:

If a horse is withdrawn from a race and it is yet to come under starter’s orders, the horse will be treated as a non-runner and a deduction will be applied. The deduction will be applied to all fixed odds bets taken prior to the processing of the scratching by PLAYA. The same deduction will apply to starting price bets should there be insufficient time for new market betting to be released. For multiple bets, a deduction will be applied to the runner of the event where the scratching occurred, and the entire bet will be re-calculated in respect of the event from which the horse was scratched. Bets taken after PLAYA has processed the deduction and once new market betting has become available, are not subject to the deduction unless a further scratching occurs. The below table will be used by PLAYA to determine the deduction applicable.

Deduction Table
ODDS DEDUCTION ODDS DEDUCTION
Over 14/1 & Above 0% Over 12/10 - 15/10 40%
Over 9/1 - 14/1 5% Over 1/1 - 12/10 45%
Over 11/2 - 9/1 10% Over 9/10 - 1/1 50%
Over 4/1 - 11/2 15% Over 7/10 - 9/10 55%

Over 18/10 - 22/10 30% Over 3/10 & Shorter 70%
Over 15/10 - 18/10 35% 3/10 & Shorter 75%

If a race or racing event is abandoned, then all bets “with a run” on the race card shall be void and refunded.

Starting Price:

The starting price of a horse will be set as the last official fixed price offered or laid by PLAYA on the horse in question before the start of the race. Starting price bets are subject to a deduction if there is a late withdrawal from the race and no new betting is displayed or introduced to the market.

The Jockey championship:

The winner of the jockey championship is the jockey which has ridden the most winners within the championship period. The winner of the British Flat Jockeys Championship is the jockey which has ridden the most winners on flat and all-weather tracks during the championship period. Please note that dead-heat rules apply.

Match Races:

For match races, the match winner will be deemed as the horse that finishes in the highest position according to the official race results. Both horses must come under starter’s orders or bets will be void. PLAYA reserves the right to change the horse in a match race without notice and reserves the right to suspend betting at any time. In hurdle/jump races, horses that come under starter’s orders are considered runners. Should only one horse complete the race, then this horse will be declared the winner. Bets will only be void if both runners do not finish the race.

Fixed Odds Places:

The following applies to fixed odds place betting: (1) No fixed odds place bets will be accepted if there are 3 runners or less in the race. All place bets in this instance will be void. (2) Normal dead heat rules and deductions apply to fixed odds place bets. (3) All fixed odds place bets are subject to 6% betting tax. (4) Reserve runners do not qualify as carded runners.

Please note that if there are 4-6 carded runners and scratching’s occur resulting in there being 3 carded runners: Places will stand and pay 2 places if a deduction applies. If no deduction applies for the scratching’s, then all bets will be void. The below table shows the amount of places paid as deemed by the amount of carded runners. The amount of runners is the official amount that are declared runners once the race starts.

FIXED ODDS PLACES TABLE
CARDED RUNNERS PLACES PAID
3 or Less 0
4 to 6 2

Open Places:

For South African race meetings, if there are 7 or less official runners in a race, all open place bets will be void regardless of whether they are winning or losing bets. Multiple bets will stand and the selection will be treated as a non-runner. In a race of 8-15 runners, 3 places will apply whereas in a race of 16 or more runners, 4 places will apply.

For International race meetings, bets will be offered and accepted on international events as determined by the applicable TAB rules in respect of each event. If a race has below the minimum amount of runners, all open place bets will be void regardless of whether they are winning or losing bets. Multiple bets will stand and the selection will be treated as a non-runner.

Dead Heats:

A dead-heat will be declared should 2 or more horses cross the finish line at exactly the same time. For winning straight and multiple bets, stake money will be divided by the number of winners and full odds paid on the reduced stake. The remainder of the stake is lost. In winning multiple bets where two races result in dead heats, the punter shall win the odds to one quarter of the stake and lose the other three quarters, and so on for further dead heats. The above dead heat rule may apply in other sporting codes such as, but not restricted to: darts, golf, athletics and soccer.
